The sitting judge in the alleged N4.9 billion fraud case initiated against Femi Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has withdrawn from the case.

The erstwhile presiding judge over the matter, Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the case be returned to Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta.

The normal procedure is for the case to be e-assigned to another judge.

Chief Fani-Kayode is standing trial for funds received during his role as the communications director for the Goodluck Jonathan re-election campaign in 2015, in a case widely regarded as a political witch hunt.

The outspoken critic of the Muhammadu Buhari administration says there is an Islamisation plot for the Fulani power bloc in the country has said that he never received illicit funds into his account.
