The remains of Isiaka Adeleke, a senator from Osun State and former governor of the southwestern state, has been buried at his residence in Ede in Osun State on Monday, April 24, 2017.
The corpse was taken to his residence from Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, the state’s capital at about 10:46am, where the chief imam of Ede, Alhaji Moshood Akaje performed the funeral prayers at about 11:03 am.
In his funeral sermon, Alhaji Ibrahim Adekilekun, the chief imam of Ansarudeen, Ede, described Adeleke as a man loved by all during his lifetime.
Adekilekun, who noted that death is inevitable for all humans, urged family members not to fight anyone over Adeleke’s death.
Adeleke’s body was buried after the Islamic prayers as family members, friends, and political associates mourned his demise.
The funeral event was attended by Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former governor of the state, and other dignitaries.
Angry Mob Attack South West Governors
A mob of angry youth attacked the canopy in which governor were sitting at the funeral of the late Isiaka Adeleke, a senator from Osun State and former governor of the southwestern state.
Senator Adeleke, who passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2017, was scheduled for burial on Monday. His death has ignited violent reactions from youth in his community who allege that the deceased was poisoned. Fingers have been pointed in the direction of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State.
The representative of Governor Aregbesola, a commissioner, Ms. Idiat Babalola was chased out of the venue of the funeral by the angry mob.
Babalola, who was seated among the dignitaries including the billionaire younger brother of the deceased, Deji Adeleke, was made to leave the event after the youth attacked the canopy under which she and the governors were seated.
According to reports, the youth said that Babalola had been named as the “running mate of the anointed candidate of the APC” in the forthcoming guber race.
“Despite pleas from family members of the deceased, the youths insisted and started shouting and raining curses on her,” one account said.
“”The youths started shaking the canopy where Governors Ibikunle Amosun, Rotimi Akeredolu, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Deji Adeleke were seated to chase out Babalola who they described as a betrayer.
“Babalola was escorted outside the house by Amosun and his security aides as the youths threw sticks and mango fruits at her,” the report said.
Osun Gov’t Declares 3-Day Mourning
Meanwhile, the Osun Government has declared a 3-day mourning in the state.
This is contained in a statement by Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, a spokesperson to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Monday in Osogbo.
“This is in honour of the departed first civilian governor of the State of Osun, Alhaji Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.
“The 3-day mourning period commences from Monday, April 24, 2017.
“During the period of mourning, all flags are to fly half mast,” the statement said.
Adeleke, 62, was the senator representing Osun West Senatorial District at the Senate under the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC) before his death on Sunday at a private hospital in Osogbo.
